Alma Marie Hemm Mills was one of 11 children born to Mervin Claude Hemm and Lula Valley Clark Hemm on April 22, 1924, in Bureau County. Alma married Arthur Eugene Mills on Jan. 29, 1944. They were married until his passing Aug. 2, 1992. Alma was the mother of nine children, Gloria Jean Hoover, Lula Mae Minor, Mary Lee Catour, Stevan E. Mills, all of East Moline, Arthur Earl Mills and Penny Sue Gladding, Colorado, Diana Marie Crayne, Rock Island, and Robert Glen Mills and Betty Ann Moore, Silvis. Alma was a grandmother to 35 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren. She has five generations living. Alma enjoyed listening to crooners Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Swaggart's gospel. She is remembered by her children as an immaculate housekeeper, maker of their clothing and a great cook with the best homemade bread in town. She enjoyed long rides in the country, reminiscing about the good ole days of her own childhood on the farm, cooking, family get-togethers, sing-a-longs and board games. In her golden years, she showed interest in painting still life and attending Red Hat functions and had fun riding the Channel Cat on the Mississippi River. Alma was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.
