Charles Smith

April 14, 1925 — September 17, 2012

Charles H. Smith, 87, of East Moline, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at Heartland Health Care Center in Moline.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Entombment will be at St. Mary's Mausoleum in East Moline. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.

He was born April 14, 1925, in Clarence, Iowa, to Herbert W. Smith and Cecilia M. Neubauer Evans. He married Dorothy L. Roman on June 12, 1954, in East Moline. She passed away July 3, 1995.

He retired from Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Company in 1987, as a crew leader in the gas department.

After serving in the Air Force during World War II, Charles bought a Piper Cub and enjoyed flying to various locations in the United States.

He was a member of the German Heritage Society, Davenport, and St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. He also enjoyed driving his Ford Model A. Charles was very artistic and enjoyed writing poems, drawing and dancing, with the Waltz being his favorite.

Survivors include his daughter, Kathy (Kevin) Schlue, Davenport; grandchildren, Joshua (Aubrey) Schlue, Davenport, Thomas (Roxanne) Schlue, East Moline, Aaron Schlue, Burt, Iowa, and Ariel Schlue, Davenport; one great-grandchild on the way!; siblings, Patricia DeClerck, Moline, Donald H. Smith, Rock Island, Mickee Speitel, Amarillo, Texas, and Nancy Winter, Rock Island; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Florence Staelens and Margaret Lage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers-in-law, Frank DeClerck, Richard Speitel and Richard Koob; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Smith; and a nephew, Kenny Smith.
