Davenport

Darlene ‘Skip’ Hambright, 94, of Davenport, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 18th at St John’s United Methodist Church (109 E 14th Street) in Davenport from 9:30 AM to 11 AM followed by a memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church or The Honor Flight (www.honorflightqc.org).

The first thing to know about Skip is to know of her love and devotion to church and God. She started her mornings with daily devotions and tried to lead her life both in faith and grace. She loved the joys and surprises life could bring. Skip was known for all her cooking and baking and always had something delicious to feed anyone who happened to stop by. She baked hundreds of cookies each Christmas for over 70 years and enjoyed sharing them during the holidays. She was also an avid gardener and could grow any plant, anywhere and anytime. Her home was surrounded by flowers and plants, both inside and out. But what Skip was most passionate about was the special times spent with dear friends and family. She cherished her family and looked forward to the times they could all spend together. Skip was truly loved and adored by all. Her kind heart and gentle manner will be missed.

Skip retired after 26 years from the Davenport School System, first as a library assistant and ending her career as a Guidance Secretary at Wood Junior High School. She spent many years volunteering with the Honor Flight and so appreciated all our soldiers and veterans who served our country. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church for 72 years. She sang in the choir, volunteered in the nursery and was an active member of the 49ers for many years.

Skip is lovingly remembered by her children Craig (Jane) Hambright, Deb (Jeff) Kinnemann, Mark Hambright, Brad (Lori) Hambright and Matt (Deb) Hambright. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Lance and Francis (Hipple) Smith), her husband of 74 years Rhea Hambright, four brothers, four sisters, and a great grandson.

Skip, like her late husband Rhea, was a staunch supporter of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, both men’s and women’s teams. We welcome all who attend her service to wear your favorite Hawkeye gear or black and gold attire.
