Don C. Smallwood, 84, of Carbon Cliff, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, at his home. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Schroder Mortuary, Colona, with visitation one hour before the service. Burial is at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. He was born May 10, 1928, in Fort Myers, Fla., to Berry and Pearl Mae Edmonson Smallwood. He married Velma McIntosh Oct. 14, 1955, in East Moline. Don served in the Army during World War II. He also participated in the Honor Flight. He was a forklift mechanic for International Harvester, East Moline, retiring in 1981, after 30 years of service. Don was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman, model airplane builder and storyteller. Survivors include his wife, Velma; children, Wayne Barber, Colona, Dennis Barber, Whittier, Calif., Paul Barber, Lakeside, Iowa, Linda Smith, Milan, and Jeff Smallwood, Carbon Cliff; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and a brother.
