Erwin A. Millen, 81, of East Moline, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.
He was born Aug. 25, 1929, in Moline, to Arlo and Virginia Lydens Millen. He married Evelyn Bockhouse on Nov. 25, 1950, in Silvis.
Erwin served in the Army. He worked at Caterpillar in East Peoria as a tool designer, then John Deere as a welding engineer, retiring in 1984.
He was a school board member for United Township High School for 17 years and past president, commissioner for EMYB for seven years, East Moline family volunteer corps for seven years, East Moline City planning and zoning appeals, a Junior Achievement advisor, East Moline/Silvis Kiwanis, East Moline American Legion Post 227, Doric Lodge No. 319 in Moline and Habitat for Humanity. He helped start the first Food Pantry in Watertown. He was the first recipient of the Joe Brown East Moline Volunteer Award and worked on many mission trips for Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina through UMCOR. He loved to play Santa Claus for many area organizations, including the Hampton Youth Committee and the Hampton United Methodist Church as well as for his grandkids. He and his family were also avid campers, traveling all over the United States.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn; children, Linda (Roger) Akers, Hampton, David (Debbie) Millen, Jefferson City, Mo., Timothy (Stephanie) Millen, Batavia, Ill., Susan (Drew) Reid, Brentwood, Tenn., and Kathleen (Louis) Michael, East Moline; grandchildren, Kimberly (Todd) Downing, Kent (Molly) Akers, Kaycie Akers, Kristen Millen, Laura Millen, Megan (Matt) Hoppensteadt, Erin Millen, Kevin Millen, Andrew Reid, Daniel Reid, Amy Reid and Crystal Eskridge; great-grandchildren, Drayden, Delainee, Jack, Haley, Fox and Genesis; siblings, Vanetta (Chuck) Nelson, Don (Leona) Millen, Jack (Sharri) Millen, Gary (Linda) Millen and Margene Pehlke; sister-in-law, Alice Jean Moon; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, James; and a brother-in-law, Walt Pehlke.
