George T. Chandes, 91, of East Moline, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at Trinity Rock Island.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Silvis Heights Baptist Church. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East
Moline. Memorials may be made to the church.
George was born Dec. 23, 1919, in Moline, the son of Tom and Mabel Brooking Chandes. He graduated from Moline High School in 1938 and served in the Army in World War IIforfour years under Gen. George Patton. He then owned and operA�ated the Chandes Spot to Eat restaurant, East Moline, for 32 years. He later managed Sambo's Restaurant, East Moline, for four years. After retiring, he worked as church custodian at Silvis Heights Baptist for 17 years, taught Sunday school for 30 years and served as a deacon.
He married Shirley Roper May 4, 1947, at SilvisHeights Baptist. She died in September 1983.
Survivors are his daughters and spouse, Becki and Rick Evans and Cindy Nitz, all of East Moline. Grandchildren are Joshuaand Nate Evans, Mandey (Mickey) Kinzenbaw, Steve (April) Nitz Jr., and Christopher Nitz.Great-grandchildren are Evan and Alea Kinzenbaw and Emma Winters. George was preceded in death by two children that died in infancy and a son, Jeffery Chandes.
