Gladys H. Hoff, 98, formerly of Colona, passed away Monday, July 16, 2012, at Ridgecrest Village in Davenport.
Per her wishes, Gladys will be cremated, and a memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at Ridge Crest Village in Davenport, with visitation starting 12:30 p.m. to service time, with light refreshments in the Koning Center at Ridgecrest Village. Private burial will be at Hampton Cemetery. Schroder Mortuary in Silvis is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to Ridgecrest Village or Genesis Hospice.
Gladys was born Jan. 5, 1914, in Pine Bluff, Ark., the daughter of Fred and Elise Falberg. She was united in marriage to Charles L. Hoff in 1941 in East Moline. He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1991.
Gladys attended United Township High School in East Moline, graduated from Augustana College and received a master's degree from Western Illinois University. She was East Moline Public librarian from 1932 to 1941. She served on the Port Byron Library Board and was president of the library board during the 1940s. Gladys was a speech correctionist in the East Moline Elementary School system for 19 years, retiring in 1978. She also taught for many years in the Augustana College Summer Speech and Hearing Center. She was a member of the Colona United Methodist Church, the Illinois Retired Teacher's Association, and the Blackhawk Unit 21, Illinois Retired Teachers' Association. Gladys was also an honorary life member of Illinois PTA.
Gladys is survived by her children, Charles (Kathy) Hoff, Ojai, Calif., Mary and the late Peter Poell, Elkhart, Ind., John (Gale) Hoff, Bettendorf; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Hengst, Moline; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Fred, Edward, James and John Falberg; her sisters, Mabel Dobyns, Margaret Jones and Dorothy Kline.
