Herman VanWinkle, 78, of Milan, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Schroder Mortuary in Silvis. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Memorials may be made to the family. Herman was born March 25, 1934, in Pocahontas, Ark., the son of Grover and Genandle Wilson VanWinkle. He married Ruth Partain on July 11, 1953. She passed away March 10, 1999. He worked as a manager at Hawkeye in Silvis. He also worked as a cook at Good Samaritan in Nebraska and also at Forest Hill in East Moline. Herman most recently worked at Walmart as a greeter. Survivors include his children, Claude E. (Linda) VanWinkle, Montana, Louise (Stan) Likes, Milan, Agusta Dilley, Milan, Aaron VanWinkle, Geneseo, and Tina (Chuck) Hopwood, Moline; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Brown, Geneseo, Ilene Keifer, Missouri, Omi Massey, Arkansas, and Mickey Haley, Arkansas; a brother, Colonel Lee, Tennessee; and special daughter and friend, Julie VanWinkle, Geneseo. Herman was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, seven brothers and a great-grandson.
