James D. Leggett, 81, of East Moline, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City. Services are noon Tuesday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Burial is at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the family. He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Albia, Iowa, to Claude and Jennie Leggett. He married Bernice A. DeLare May 20, 1953, in Rock Island. She passed away May 1, 2001. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He worked at the Rock Island Arsenal and later at John Deere Malleable as a wood pattern maker until he became owner and operator of New Way Auto Parts in Silvis. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 1014 in Moline. He helped start Cordova's Dragway and won the world series in 1964. He also enjoyed stock car racing and dragsters and loved watching NASCAR. Survivors include his children, Dale Leggett, East Moline, Deborah (Harold) Raaen, Georgia, and Denise Campbell, East Moline; sister, Sharon Leggett, East Moline; and a niece, Laurie. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jerry.
