James "JW" Smith, 85, of Colona, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, at Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Schroder Mortuary in Colona, with visitation one hour before service time. The family requests everyone please dress casual. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. Memorials may be made to the family. James was born May 6, 1928, in Purdin, Mo., the son of James W. Sr. and Leathia Bagley Smith. He married Mayetta Mossbarger on Aug. 10, 1948, in Brookfield, Mo. James was a rodeo rider for 10 years and also farmed for 12 years while working for John Deere for 29 1/2 years until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed camping, fishing and riding snowmobiles and motorcycles. Survivors include his wife, Mayetta, Colona; children, Linda (Mike Seibert) Waddell, Andover, Donald (Diana) Smith, Colona, and Charlie Smith, Colona; grandchildren, Donny and Nick Smith, Amy Dothard, Carla Johnson and Lori and Kelly Waddell; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and one great-great-grandchild on the way; and sisters, Norma Abbott and Janet Wingate, both of Missouri, and Judy Watson, of Colona. James was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.
