Matthew Simmons, 60, of Aurora, Ill., formerly of East Moline, passed away March 27, 2011, at his home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, East Moline, with visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the American Cancer Societyfor lung cancer research.
Matthew was born March 30, 1950, in Anniston, Ala., the son of Tinie Jones and Hattie Simmons. He attended the University of Illinois-Urbana and served in theU.S. Army. Matthew married Vanessa Reed on June 19, 1992, in East Moline.
He retired in 1993 from the Rock IslandArsenal and most recently, wasa manager at Sears Automotive Center.Matt enjoyed watching Illini basketball, a good western movie and loved spending time with his three grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Vanessa; daughters, Andrea Simmons, Minneapolis, Minn., Shantrese Scott, East Moline, and Kwanisha Scott, Aurora; grandchildren, Elijah Smith, Maliya Smith, both of East Moline, and Sean Matthew Carter, Aurora; sister, Beatrice (Marvin) Reed, Anniston; brothers, Samuel (Patricia) Simmons, East Moline, John (Janice) Wallace Jr., Aaron Wallace and Michael Wallace, all of Anniston. Matthew was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
