Richard G. Nelson, 90, a 45-plus year resident of Colona, died April 9, 2016, at Hillcrest Home, Geneseo. Services are 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Visitation is 9:30 a.m. to service time. Burial is in Woodhull Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Green River United Methodist Church, Colona He was born May 22, 1925, in Rock Island, to Oscar and Lillie M. Heflin Nelson. He married his wife of over 63 years, Dorthy Daniels, in Princeton, Ill., on Jan. 31, 1953. He entered the Navy in 1950 in Chicago, Ill., and served in the Pacific during WWII. He worked 35 years as an inspector for John Deere Harvester. He was a member of Green River United Methodist Church, former president of the Lions Club of Colona and former 4th Ward alderman in Colona. Richard had a passion for, as well as raised, race horses, which he raced locally and in Chicago. Survivors are spouse, Dorthy Nelson; daughters, Diane Baird, West Virginia, Dayle (Gary) Sullivan, Silvis, and Dawn (Tom) Jatczak, Las Vegas, Nev.; son, Daniel Nelson, Beech Grove, Ind.; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Mercedes Perry, Tacoma, Wash.; sister-in-law, Marilyn Nelson, LeClaire; and brother-in-law, John Knaack, Moline. He was preceded by parents; sister, Fanchon Knaack; twin brother in infancy, Robert Nelson; and brother, Michael Nelson.
