Robert Clarke

Robert "Bob" Clarke, 93, of Silvis, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Elim Covenant Church in Moline with visitation one-and-a-half hours prior to service time. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Moline. Memorials may be made to the church or Christian Friendliness.

Bob was born Jan. 15, 1919, in Silvis, the son of William John and Hattie Swanson Clarke. He married Catherine Bergstrand April 6, 1951, at Elim Covenant Church.

He graduated in 1936 from United Township High School. He served in the Navy as a radar technician in the Pacific Theatre. After the war, he attended Michigan Tech in Houghton, Mich., Augustana College and Bradley University in Peoria. He completed his master's degree in industrial engineering at the University of Iowa. Bob worked for 27 years at Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1973. He also worked as an instructor at Black Hawk College in a machinist apprentice training program.

He was a member of Elim Covenant Church for 61 years, where he served as chairman, Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder and board member. Bob enjoyed Bible study, reading, journaling, traveling and woodworking. Bob loved people and enjoyed conversing with anyone on just about any topic. He loved life and took pleasure in each day up until the end.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine, Silvis; children, Cathy (Glenn) Bear, Colona, and John Clarke, Moline; grandchildren, Dennis (Juli) Bear, Moline, Steven Bear, Moline; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and a sister, Evelyn Bergstrand, Moline.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marian Cass.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, for the care given to Bob.
