Shirley M. Phelps, 87, of East Moline, formerly of Silvis, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2012, at Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline with her husband of 69 years at her side. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. Schroder Mortuary in Silvis is assisting with services. Shirley was born September 10, 1924, in Aledo, Ill., the daughter of J. Walter and Ruth Elizabeth Johnson Sherer. She married William H. Phelps on January 2, 1943, in St. Louis. Shirley graduated from Rock Island High School and was a member of the Illini Hospital Auxiliary. She also obtained her Realtor license and worked with Frank Mahar Agency. Shirley will be greatly missed by her husband, Bill; three daughters, Peggy (Kenneth) Laud of East Moline, Theresa Daniel of Silvis and Carol (Walter) Schweiss of Taylor Ridge; son, Michael (Ginger) Phelps of Davenport; grandchildren, Bill (Tracy) Schweiss of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Victoria Spevak of Rock Island, Josh (Jillian) Kennedy of East Moline, Kevin (Tracy) Wilcox of Moline, Lori (Kara) Wilcox of Moline and Andrew (Elizabeth) Phelps of Davenport; and great-grandchildren, Matthew Whelan, Austin Whelan, Nathan Whelan, Tyler Griffin, Avery Kennedy and Maddux Kennedy. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Vivian Kuhlman, a brother, J. Ward Sherer and an infant son, Billy Lee Phelps. The family wishes to thank the staff at Hope Creek Care Center for the care and attention given to Shirley during her short stay there.
